Crucible Lusaka students recently participated in a valuable virtual meeting with renowned conservators from the British Museum and the Smithsonian Museum. Alex Owen and Erinn Dunlea, both Conservators of Organic Objects at the British Museum, shared insights on the importance of understanding available resources when undertaking conservation work. They further responded to student questions on methods used to engage large public audiences and the systems institutions rely on to keep pace with rapidly evolving technology. There was a later session that featured Ashley Jehle, Objects Conservator at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African Art, who provided additional technical perspectives that enriched the discussion.
Students received practical feedback that helped to strengthen the development of their project products for the Livingstone Museum.
Following the virtual sessions, a group of students visited the National Archives of Zambia in Lusaka for an in-depth, hands-on learning experience. They were introduced to archival procedures, including document preservation, cataloguing techniques, and the importance of safeguarding historical records. The visit offered a close look at Zambia’s documentary heritage and highlighted the role of archives in supporting research, education, and national memory. Students asked thoughtful questions and engaged actively with archivists, further enhancing their understanding of heritage management. This experience complemented the international guidance received earlier, creating a well-rounded foundation for their ongoing museum-related work.

Crucible Lusaka extends its appreciation to the British Museum, Smithsonian Institution, and National Archives for their commitment to nurturing young professionals. These engagements have expanded students’ global awareness, strengthened their technical skills, and reaffirmed the importance of collaboration in cultural preservation. We remain proud of our students’ dedication and look forward to seeing the impact of these learning opportunities reflected in their future contributions to the Livingstone Museum.
