Students at Crucible Lusaka are currently completing a seven-week Leadership Project focused on value addition across key sectors in Zambia. Set in partnership with the British Chamber of Commerce Zambia, the project challenges students to answer a central question: how improving value addition in a Zambian value chain could drive economic growth, and what leadership choices would be required to make this happen.
Students were challenged with:
“How could improving value addition in a Zambian value chain support economic growth, and what leadership choices would be needed to make this happen in your community or chosen sector?”
Working independently, students have selected sectors of interest and developed ideas grounded in research, economic analysis and real-world constraints. Current projects include strengthening practical skills within the education system, exploring new uses of sweet potatoes in food production, and examining how Zambia can capture greater value from its emerald resources. Each project requires students to move beyond theory and engage with the complexities of implementation.
On 3 March, students presented their emerging ideas to Mr John Paton, CEO of the British Chamber of Commerce Zambia, who visited the school to provide feedback. He encouraged students to focus on what would work in practice, taking into account regulatory, economic and logistical constraints.

The experience challenged students to refine their thinking and apply their academic knowledge with greater precision and realism.
As students finalise their work, they are preparing both a written proposal and a formal presentation, demonstrating their ability to analyse systems, justify decisions and communicate ideas clearly.
The project has already strengthened students’ confidence and highlighted the direct relevance of their A level studies to real-world challenges.
This Leadership Project reflects Crucible Lusaka’s commitment to developing not only strong academic outcomes, but the capacity to think independently, act with purpose and contribute meaningfully to Zambia’s future.
By engaging with real economic questions and making informed leadership choices, students are taking important steps towards becoming the pioneering leaders the country needs.
At Crucible, we believe education is about more than academics, it’s about leadership, collaboration, and character. Follow our publication to stay updated on how our students are preparing to become pioneering leaders for a prosperous Zambia.
